Students must bring personal field gear including headlamps, appropriate clothing, bat handling gloves, and footwear for working outdoors, and basic personal items. Insect repellent for chiggers, ticks, and mosquitos is strongly advised, and poison ivy is present throughout the park. Some sites require working in knee-deep water, in thick mud; waders or other appropriate footwear is highly recommended. Our workshop location is in the geologically world-class sinkhole plain of western Kentucky, which includes extraordinary Mammoth Cave National Park. At over 450 -miles- of surveyed passage, Mammoth Cave is without question the longest and most studied cave in the world. Our field work contributes to important ongoing long-term research and will acquaint us with a diversity of eastern bat species near caves and forest stream settings. At this time of year we will have opportunity to witness the spectacular fall swarming behavior of gray myotis outside of a restored hibernacula. Saturday night participate in Mammoth Cave's family-friendly annual public Bat Night public program event for an extra field opportunity to handle bats

The course curriculum combines a combination of classroom discussions, demonstrations, and night-time field work designed to provide a solid foundation in  species identification, bat handling, netting and trapping techniques, and night vision observation. The KY training workshop will focus on the differing needs of up to 10 bat species known from the area and will highlight diverse research and inventory techniques appropriate for each species of bat to obtain the most robust and accurate survey results.

Dates: Tuesday August 27 thru Sunday August 31, 2024. Training begins promptly at 10 am on Day 1 and will end at the conclusion (midnight) of the night field trip (Bat Night) on the last day. 

Scheduled Lecture and/or Demonstration Topics: Daytimes include in-person classroom lectures and live demonstrations. Note this workshop may not visit the interior of any caves; please consider arriving a day early or staying a day later to visit one of the numerous tour options inside Mammoth Cave.  Bat Acoustic Hardware and Software: We offer another workshop in the same location specifically for bat acoustic monitoring. Students are welcome to bring or their own or borrow BCM bat detectors as desired, but no formal instruction is on the agenda. Participants will be given a full working trial of the SonoBatLIVE software to use.

What states does sales tax apply?
If products are shipped to PA, you will be charged sales tax. When you enter your shipping address to any other state, the PA sales tax is removed.

I am tax exempt, federal/state/tribal buyer located outside of PA, how do I purchase?
Simply add items to your cart and checkout. When you enter your shipping address outside of PA, the PA sales tax will be removed. BCM does not collect tax for any other states. It is not necessary to contact us with tax-exempt paperwork, etc. if you are outside of PA.

Do you accept Purchase Orders (PO)?
We accept POs from recognized US based organizations for items shipped domestically. We reserve the right to refuse any PO. There may be a 10% service fee applied to all POs. 

What can I return?
You may return new, unopened items sold within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Shirts, hats, and mugs are made to order and are not returnable.

When will I get my refund?
Most refunds are fully refunded in 3-5 business days after we receive and process your return.

Does BCM do replacements?
We can only replace the exact item and version you ordered, and you are responsible to return the damaged item within 30 days. If you want to exchange for a different item, you will need to return the item and place a new order.

Pettersson D500x and M500 Bat Detectors Return and Exchange Policy
All detectors are tested by BCM staff before shipping to customers. Please contact BCM first detailing the issue you are having with the hardware and obtain a Return Authorization. Should email or phone troubleshooting fail to resolve the issue, you should send the unit in suitable packaging to BCM, with the RA number written on the packaging.

BCM will confirm the unit is defective was not abused or water damaged. BCM will replace the unit at our discretion usually within one week. Units requiring repairs may take 6-8 weeks.

Pettersson factory warranty is one year.

D500x External Microphone Return Policy
All microphones are tested by BCM staff before shipping to customers. Please contact BCM first detailing the issue you are having with the Microphone and obtain a Return Authorization. Should email or phone troubleshooting fail to resolve the issue, you should send the unit in suitable packaging to BCM, with the RA number written on the packaging.

DOA microphones are replaced immediately at no charge. There is a $150 for refurbishing used microphones, shipped immediately if in stock.

Electronics
Electronics purchased from BCM are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. These items must be in new condition with original packaging and accessories. All bat detectors sold by BCM are supported by the device's manufacturers. In the unlikely event a detector appears to be defective, please contact the customer support network for the computer manufacturer to have it serviced under warranty. Pettersson D500x/M500 devices have specific policies, see above.

Software
Software titles purchased from BCM are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. These items must be unopened and still in their plastic wrap.

General items

Other items purchased from BCM can only be returned if:

  • The return is packaged and shipped in the original packaging.
  • The items are still in new condition.
  • You ship your return within 30 days of receipt of the original shipment.

Any returns that do not meet the above qualifications may receive a reduced refund or be returned to the purchaser. Some items may incur a restocking fee as these items must be inspected, tested, and repackaged. If a restocking fee applies it will be noted on the product information page.  All returns will be less original shipping costs.

  • Do you know how many people you are capping this training at?

    Approximately 15, with 20 being the absolute limit.

  • How do we go and get titres? I just received my last does of the rabies vaccine a few weeks ago, so I have proof of the shot dates, but didn't think I would need to get a booster for a few years. How would I get an acceptable titre test to provide?

    The same heath care provider that gave you the initial series can provide a titre test. In rare instances, the vaccine does not take and the test is a good followup & and something that is done every few years. Alternately places like WorkNet (they specialize with various drug testing for employers) can aslo facilitate a test.

  • I am getting my rabies vaccines. There is some debate because nobody in my city knows anything about them. I plan on getting two and the CDC recommendations suggest one week apart. What are your suggestions? Thank you in advance.

    I would follow the CDC guidelines or your doctor. Recently the guideline changed from 3 shots to 2.
