He began his work with bats investigating their physiological regulation through the differential demands of cold hibernative torpor to the intense demands of flight and high altitude. He has since applied a physiological ecology perspective to conservation and management issues of bats such as roosting, foraging, energetics, and their basic wildlife-habitat associations. He regularly teaches bat biology and acoustic monitoring field classes and workshops throughout the US and abroad. Joe began collecting full-spectrum recordings of bats more than 20 years ago with the notion that they may someday prove useful for identifying bats, and ultimately developed SonoBat to fill the gap he needed to facilitate the specialized tasks of viewing, analyzing, and comparing bat echolocation calls and sequences for non-invasive species recognition.

John Chenger formed BCM in 1998 to provide bat-specific surveys nationwide, successful artificial bat roosts, and field gear. His first experience with radio tracking spring migrating Indiana bats was in 2000, and in 2019 he led a massive fall project coordinating up to 15 ground and air trackers. Since 2004 he has been a recurring instructor at nationwide training workshops offered by Bat Conservation International and Bat Survey Solutions. Other work included the Pennsylvania Game Commission, professional photographer & videographer, and Director of Interpretation at a commercial cave.

Todd Sinander is a Wildlife Biologist and Project Manager with BCM since 2010 who coordinates surveys with agencies and landowners across the Eastern US. Instructors cover techniques for properly deploying both stationary point detectors and for conducing mobile acoustic transects. We focus on equipment selection; configuring appropriate settings; and data collection, organization and management workflows. Students learn how to post-process data with SonoBat software program with guided, hand-on practice to interpret "auto-classification" decisions and how to manually confirm or reject the computer-generated "probable species presence" results. Participants become empowered to design and conduct their own acoustic surveys to satisfy any local or national protocols

Our workshop location is in the geologically world-class sinkhole plain of western Kentucky, which includes extraordinary Mammoth Cave National Park. At over 450 -miles- of surveyed passage, Mammoth Cave is without question the longest and most studied cave in the world. Our event employs the most current inventory and monitoring techniques and serve as a valuable addition to the long-term monitoring efforts for bats in an area. The course curriculum, which combines a combination of classroom lecture/discussions, demonstrations, and night-time field work, is designed to provide a general introduction to basic bat acoustic monitoring and data management. The Kentucky venue at Cave City is especially valuable for instruction because of the diversity of local habitats providing roosts and/or watering resources for 11+ species of bats in the area.

Scheduled Lecture and/or Demonstration Topics: Daytimes include in-person classroom lectures and live demonstrations primarily using the SonoBat software for acoustic workflow. Many aspects of acoustic monitoring training does not translate well into an online format. This is an IN PERSON training and no modules are available online. Note this workshop does not tour the interior of any caves; please consider arriving a day early or staying a day later to visit one of the numerous tour options inside Mammoth Cave. We have additional workshops preceding this event, including a Bat Capture & Handling Workshop, if interested.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask BCM a Question
  • Hello, I am interested in the Bat Acoustic Monitoring course. What is the estimated time length per day for the course? Thank you.

Hello- most of our workshops follow a format of lectures, field trips during the day, and then an evening event. With acoustic workshops, the evening event is usually just a few hours and then there is opportunity that evening for 1:1 instructor time and/or crunching data. Assume ~9AM thru 10 PM for acoustic workshops, midnight for capture workshops.
