Bat Detectors - USB Microphones

These devices are microphones sensitive to the ultrasound environment. They require connection to a smartphone, tablet, or computer running compatible software. An advantage of these devices is that the software displays a live sonogram for instant gratification when using capture apps such as SonoBatLIVE or BatSound Touch. These are professional level microphones capable of making high-end recordings which sophisticated software such as SonoBat can use for species analysis. A disadvantage is the power-hungry smartphone/tablet/laptop is not ideal long remote recording, and microphones are less weather resistant as they are not intended to be left unattended. At BCM workshops, the best all-around in this catagory is the Pettersson M500-384 while the Binary Acoustic Technology AR150FG consistently outperforms on mobile transects.
