Bat Detector Buyer's Guide - Passive Detectors
Inventors of bat detectors never intended them to be left for weeks on end, quietly listening and logging the inaudible ultrasonic calls of bats. Today we have devices that are more suited for long term deployments, with large memory capacity, long battery life, and with cabled microphones that can be deployed hundreds of feet from the control box. Some can even be monitored remotely using an internet connection. The data burden created by recording bats for hours, days, and weeks on end can be intimidating. All modern passive detectors from all manufacturers have large enough battery and memory to record plenty long enough in the field, and a weatherproof chassis is moot considering the unit + cables + mic realistically need to be in a protective box anyway. Failures usually occur from human error, animals, and vandals. If your project is critical, do not leave any passive detector out unattended any longer than you can afford to lose the data.
