QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Ask BCM a Question-
I do understand that the process of building a representative reference collection of recordings for species ID is a complex; however, with the data that I have of bat recordings, I am sure that I am able to build a database with the Caribbean species because I have some references about Bat Calls (spectrograms of echolocation) analysis of some species that I am sure those spectrograms of echolocation belong to those species of bat that I collected via mist net and ID them. So, my major interest is to build such database from the collection of recordings of the species that I have collected as well as the references analysis. So, Base on the information that you gave me, you think that I can construct or build my own bat call data base with the recoding file that I have already collected that is truth?
It is not possible for users to change the SonoBat classification engine, or add your own calls to it’s decision math. The call ID decisions are made from a subset of up to 125 measurements SonoBat takes for each call pulse, applies call quality rules, and for those that pass, it will attempt to render a decision with various degrees of confidence based on the region of the US or Europe the recording was made. To make a classifier for a region that does not have a commercial solution yet, people have used the export function in SonoBat SonoVet tool to export a call parameters spreadsheet with measurements. Using these measurements it is possible in other statistical software to create filters, guides, or even automated apps that help categorize unknown calls. I don’t have any experience with that process and because bats change their calls frequently even in the same recording, it is an extremely intense proposition. The call recordings that form the basis of the library must be captured ideally from free-flying bats in a habitat you expect to make future passive recordings. The bats being used should have been recorded 10 seconds or more after release, for hopefully more faithful recordings, not distress or orientation calls. I believe statistically one should obtain 30 call samples of each call type a bat produces (assume there are 4 or 5 call types at least), and use 30 individual bats or more. Whatever the number, it begins to add up quickly and finding enough bats and getting clean free-flying recordings becomes a monumental task.

you have some new software such as: BAT ACOUSTIC DATA POST PROCESSING AND MANUAL VETTING, SONOBAT REFERENCE VIEWS FOR MANUAL VETTING, SONOBAT ZC (ZERO CROSS) PUBLIC BETA, and SONOBAT DATA WIZARD, so my question is those new software can help me out to conduct the Bat echolocation call analysis and identification? Please if so, tell me which do you recommend?
You will get the Data Wizard and the guides in the new installer that will provide the most current information and software.

I have recorded some Bat Calls (spectrograms of echolocation) of some species that I am sure those spectrograms of echolocation belong to those species of bat that I have collected with the mist net; however, I would like to learn how to build a database with species of bat that I have collected and I know that the spectrograms of echolocation belong to such species; so my question regarding to it is: How can I build the database with the spectrograms of echolocation that I have already identify for some species of bat?Do you have a tutorial video that can show me how to do that?
The SonoBat guides will familiarize you with some of this process. The process of building a representative reference collection of recordings for species ID is a complex, nuanced, task that I can not adequately describe in an email response or basic tutorial video. I suggest you find someone that has done this to mentor you, or take one of our field classes where we spend a week training this process: https://batsurveysolutions.com/

I have a pile of WAV format files that I have collected via SonobatLive- Universal, How can I analyze and be able to identify the species of bats, using Software like SonoBat 4 – Universal?
As of now, SonoBat only has automated classification for North American and United Kingdom species (SonoBat full version). SonoBat Universal operates as a viewer for bat recordings, and enables comparisons with saved reference calls of known species or call types. SonoBat Universal also performs batch processing to selectively extract call parameter data from sets of full-spectrum recorded files. You can use that parameter data to generate your own statistical classification using parameter data from species-known recordings. For UK and European bats, you can also use the SonoBat batch parameter data with the BatsID web interface for classification (although it does not perform as accurately as the SonoBat UK classifiers do for UK species. The “Universal” name designates that the version works for species anywhere for viewing and collecting data. I have just issued you an updated version of SonoBat Universal (look for an email from sendowl.com). Click on the guides button on the upper right of the panel. Working through those guides will show you how to process your data.

Good Afternoon, We have Sonobat 4.0.6 installed on some laptops in our office which must be upgraded to Windows 10. Is there any conflict to run Sonobat with Window 10? Thanks much.
No Windows 10 is just fine. For this just email jchenger@batmanagement.com your old registration key(s) and I can issue you an update, you are a number of versions behind and we can get you caught back up.

What are the recommended mics to operate sonobat live?
Hello- at least a few microphones will work such as:
Pettersson M500
Pettersson D500x-to-USB converter
Binary Acoustics AR125/150/125FG/150FG
Binary Acoustics AR125 EXT
Binary Acoustics MiniMic
In addition some other microphones that are "standard Windows microphones" such as the Dodotronic devices should work, but they have not been tested.
Also these mics will work with the Android app called Bat Recorder. However, when using a smartphone with these mics there is no way to charge the device, which can limit the usefulness of the system. Still, it is an easy way to make recordings for a few hours. -
