The Super Duplex Bat House provides a large, long term bat sanctuary for large backyards, parks, long term mitigation, and wildlife management areas. Twin 4''x6'' treated posts (obtained locally) provide redundancy and strength against high winds and long term deterioration. The 5.5'' space between the posts is filled with hand-roughened roost baffles. Our 4-Chamber ColonyLodge Universal bat houses are added in a back-to-back bat configuration. The ColonyLodge features slots in the back allowing bats to move into various sized crevices into the middle of the structure, or switch roost boxes to find their preferred microclimate. The standard Super Duplex configuration may hold approximately ~500+ bats! 

The Super Duplex is expandable by adding one additional 4 Chamber Universal bat houses on the left and right sides. Start small and add on modules as desired. This creates a "bat condo"-class structure using four of BCM's successful Universal bat houses. The dual posts easily support the additional weight and negligible additional wind load. This configuration may hold approximately ~920 bats, and is the least expensive, easiest to construct plan to approach the 1000 bat capacity that is ideal for watchable wildlife installations. 

Does it work? Bats often prefer roosting in larger structures, which can help buffer nighttime temperature extremes, as well as heat up faster in the morning. Biologists are considering multiple smaller bat house structures are better than one large "condo"-class structure.  Multiple Duplex or other bat houses spread the bat colony out among many structures, providing a variety of microclimate options. Multiple roosts provide bats with parasite and predator avoidance options. Multiple smaller bat roosts allow bat families to break up and segregate as they see fit. If one structure is vandalized or collapses over time, the whole colony will not suddenly be at risk, but will occupy the other nearby structures until repairs made.

A Super Duplex in Pennsylvania was occupied when checked 12 days after installation. The Super Duplex is easier to install and is less costly. It is possible to install 3 or more Super Duplex configurations than one bat condo-class structure. 

The Shade Roof version. This model incorporates a shade roof for warm climates. The shade roof does not touch the actual roof of the bat houses. Bat houses receive heat from the sun in the morning and evening, but are shaded during the hottest part of the day. This design is highly successful in all the Gulf Coast states as well as low elevations in the West. 

The Standard Roof version. This configuration is for all but the hotter locations in the US and Canada. A brown aluminum roof is pressed over both bat houses (including the screws holding the bat house onto the structure), and the center roost cavity in the middle between the houses.

Shade or Standard Roof and Mount Only version. This option is for those who already purchased 4 Chamber Universal bat houses and would like to construct the Super Duplex. The kit includes the mounts and roof assembly. You provide 4''x6''x16' treated posts. Note this kit is specifically for BCM 4 Chamber Universal bat houses. Other bat houses of same or smaller widths -might- work but expect to have to make modifications.

It is possible to assemble the mounts, put the posts in place, then add the bat houses and roof separately using ladders, scaffolding, or a lift machine.     Either color may work. Bats may not use the bat house if the barn is easily accessible to them however, and it may take several seasons for some to move in.
