AcroBAT is a new innovative bat monitoring and recording system developed by Binary Acoustic Technology, LLC. It is designed to enhance bat acoustic monitoring and classification protocols by eliminating two prominent sources of error: 1) classifier errors introduced by the presence of multiple bats and bat species in recordings; and 2) classifier errors due to presence of multipath and erroneous or weak calls in recordings. Acro- BATtm provides a unique solution by applying an Agile call- sequence recording optimizer (Acro) which tracks bats, recovers the call-sequences generated by each bat and records them to disk, one file per bat, per bat-pass.
An AcroBAT field recording system is composed of a Binary Acoustic Technology’s AcroBAT adaptive receiver, along with a copy of AcroBAT software running on a Window’s laptop or tablet computer. For transect monitoring or acoustic mistnetting, we recommend mounting the receiver so that it points directly upward. This provides hemispherical coverage and allows the system to track bats flying overhead, as well as directly to the sides. The AcroBAT software is designed to work in conjunction with several of the classifiers employed in today's bat monitoring protocols. It provides flexible output formats which have been verified for use with SonoBat, BCID, and EchoClass.
AcroBAT includes a new compressed file format developed jointly by Binary Acoustic Technology, SonoBat, and Myotisoft which allows seamless workflow integration between an AcroBAT field recording system and a SonoBat recording analyzer and classifier. This allows bat pass recording tracks generated by AcroBAT to be read natively by SonoBat just like any traditional WAV file.
AcroBat is better at:
- The only self contained bat detector that seperates individual bats in the monitoring airspace, and produces individual files for each individual bat.
- Can track up to 12 bats simultaneously.
- Improves signal quality substantially by removing background noise; tracking only pulses that move.
- Active recording/viewing live full spectrum activity, and then selectively recording only the bat pass of interest.
- Mobile transects; the omnidirectional-like coverage of this microphone is ideal for moving transects and captures significantly more pulses in files than directional microphones and lower quality omni-directional mics.
- Educational demos; people are entranced by the "campfire effect" of watching bat activity go by live.
- Passive monitoring; the AR150-FG is housed in a robust weatherproof housing more appropriate for inclement weather.
- Orient this microphone vertically with the element on the top to minimize moisture in the cable port. Billed as omnidirectional, raise this microphone as far as possible from all obstructions (~12'+ above ground) and extend it into the airspace you intend to monitor.
