Just a few bats can eat thousands of insects in a single night, making them the perfect substitute for nasty pesticides. By eating everything from crop-pest beetles to annoying mosquitoes, bats help keep your garden and your family safe. Simply just having bats nearby actually can drive away some insects!
"Artificial roosts" are man-made homes bats move into where they have lost natural habitat. Artificial roosts for bat mitigation or management can be categorized into seven groups! Bats may be found in Bat Houses of course, but also Artificial Bark, Artificial Trees, Bridges, Culverts, Old Buildings, and even purposely built Artificial Caves!
BCM's founder John Chenger helped define all-wood bat houses during his time at the Pennsylvania Game Commission in the 1990's. While these early bat houses were quite successful, it became clear a lack of maintenance ultimately would render all wood-exterior bat houses unusable. A long-lasting solution was sought. Experiments showed bats preferred wood on the interior of the roost, but the exterior could be virtually anything -but- wood. While we have seen bats move into our bat houses in as little as a few days, the reality is it may take -years- for bats to move in. Therefore it's critical the roost exterior last as long as possible; many all-wood bat houses are unusable before bats even occupy them! Our Colony-series bat houses and Super Rocket Roost come with an industry-first 10 year guarantee against splitting which typically renders other bat houses unusable.
Colony Series Multi-chamber Maternity Bat Houses |
BCM's ColonyCabin 3 chamber bat house features a no-maintenance exterior which will outlast any wood based bat house. It is our least expensive resin bat house, making it more economical to try a few different solar exposures or locations to more likely start new bat colonies in an area. Once installed, few people maintain a bat house, so we make ours to last as long as possible; no painting is necessary and unlike wood there are no seams to separate. An extra 4th roost chamber offers some overheating protection when installed with our mount kits. Mount kits install with 4 bolts and screws, and ColonyCabins mount with 2 bolts and 3 screws simple. A single ColonyCabin might hold up to ~126 bats and has four colors to choose from. |
Our ColonyLodge Universal 4 Chamber Bat House features a resin exterior that requires no assembly or painting, and will outlast any unmaintained all-wood bat house. ColonyLodges have different crevice widths and four colors suitable for species found all over North America. ColonyLodges have a larger capacity (up to ~210 bats) than the ColonyCabin but is still light enough to slide up a ladder. A 5th roost crevice which provides bats with a more ventilated space is included with mount kits. ColonyLodges have the traditional "woodgrain bat house look" without the issues inherent with an all-wood bat house. |
Our ColonyCondo 5 chamber is the largest single bat house we offer, comes in four colors, and may hold up to ~260 bats. It features the same type of resin exterior that never needs painting, has no seams that will separate over time, and will outlast any unmaintained wood bat house. It is the building block to create even larger roost structures such as the Super Duplex, and the 2x2 and 3x3 Modular Condos suitable suitable for large properties, parks, wildlife management areas, and other ideal habitat where a long-term roost is desired. All of BCM's bat house structures ship UPS and can be installed on appropriate existing building, structures, or on posts obtained locally. We offer installation service in limited areas and availability. |
Super Rocket Box - An "Artificial Tree" for Bats |
The Super Rocket Roost simulates a dead tree, allowing bats to enter into crevices found under an industrial-quality resin shell. Two styles of crevices are found the extra long height of the roost, allowing bats to find just what they are looking for. It's a different look, easy to install, and can be successful in all but the hottest regions. |
Day Lodge Kit - Easy to assemble wood bat house with upgraded resin roof |
DayLodge three chamber bat houses are totally functional, totally solid choices. The exterior is plywood, and the mounting is thru the roost eliminating any stress on the roof. The synthetic roof made from a slab of recycled plastic lumber lasting decades. DayLodges can be successful on buildings and posts, and might be a choice to spread out roosts in different sites to start new colonies. Kits are very popular for DIYers and group activities! |
