Pettersson u384 Microphone

How do I use your U 384 microphone for recording signal in PC ? Just to plug it into any USB2 port ?

Yes it plugs into USB 2 or 3 and is a standard windows microphone. No additional power is needed. You can extend the usb cables using several usb active extension cables as needed  A number of recording apps are available the most powerful one for bats is SonobatLIVE. It comes with Batsound Touch. Other apps are possible, including one for android called batrecorder. There is a basic listing of the apps on the bcm and Pettersson website www.batsound.com

Is the u-384 compatible withe the smartphone model "Core X4"? I bought it but it seems that my smartphone doesn't detect it while I fixed a converter USB C/microUSB ... Thank you

We can't speak for every model, but if you meet the specs of the BatRecorder app https://digitalbiology.com/bat-recorder then it should work. You may want to try a different -brand- of USB convertor as not all work as advertised.

Greetings: I'm considering buying a Pettersson u384 and I have a few specific questions. Is the device compatible with a Samsung Galaxy S8+? Also, in terms of compatibility, as OS sofware changes via upgrades, is the Pettersson u384 likely to have future compatibiltiy conflicts or is there a continual software update process? Are the recorded files able to be transfered to other devices (laptops) and used in various different types of software for analysis? Does the device require OTG compatibility? These Pettersson microphones are "standard windows microphones", so they are future-proof. It is the software that must be made to take advantage of the data. For bat recordings, try BatRecorder for Android. The recordings are saved to your memory card on your phone which should offload onto a regular computer/hard drive for permenant storage. If the phone lacks a removable storage card, then connecting via USB would be the next method to offload the files.

I want to know what is the best option between the u384 and the D1000x. To work in monitoring and ecological studies of bat populations.

The D1000x is first and foremost -the best- ultrasonic microphone we have -ever- used, hands down. It is better suited for active monitoring or labratory research where the best possible recording is desired and the device will be monitored (it is too expensive to leave unattended, etc.) It has a built in recorder with a trigger system that is user-definable, so it many be set to record under a variety of conditions and for various purposes (many people actually buy it to study something besides bats). The files are then offloaded from a memory card and viewed in analysis software such as BatSound or SonoBat. The D1000x is capable of 768kHz sampling rate, blowing the doors off most any device in it's price range. 

The u384 is intended to be used on a tablet running BatSoundTouch or SonoBatLIVE capture software. The recordings are then further viewed/sorted using SonoBat or other bat analysis software. It does not have the lab quality noise floor of the D1000x, but the capture software is more convienant to use. The 384 sampling rate is perfectly suitable for bats worldwide, and extending the mic on a pole will maximize the capabilities. The u384 is mass produced therefore making it cost effective (mic+tablet+long cable ~$600?) wheras the D1000x device is a unique custom lab instrument.

You say in your specs "Microphone may be extended over 40' using an inexpensive USB active extension" but I'm having an issue finding a way to attached the microphone at the end of the extension stick / retracting pole. It is too small to fit in any device meant for smart phones. What would you recommend?

Hi there- we just use #64 size rubber bands for temporary monitoring' easy on and off and more or less can be positioned any way you like and attached to anything. Try to keep the actual mic element as far away from anything as possible when attaching. 

Can I use the Pettersson u384 Microphone with an iPhone 6s plus? I assume I'll need some sort of micro-b/lightening adaptor.

You can in theroy with the right physical connection (the Apple Camera Adapter was one way on certain iPhones at one time), and by using an app called Ultrasonic Analyizer. However, the app is not built for bat recording necessarilly. Once you use SonoBatLIVE or Pettersson's BatSoundTouch it's hard to use the iPhone. For smartphones there is a better app called BatRecorder for Android, so some people who really want a smartphone sized device buy a used $100 Android phone specifically for that app. - JC

Is the u384 omnidirectional ?

To some degree at low frequencies. Microphones like this one are intended to be connected directly to certain smartphones (check plug compatibility or adapter must be used) and used to make quick assessments of bat activity or show others bat calls during demos/live presentations. For any other application the M500-384 with a long cable is a better choice allowing more flexibility with mic placement, which leads to clearer recordings. The M500-384 can be connected to a smartphone with proper adapters, etc.

I have an iPhone (13), and am considering purchasing the U384. Is it straightforward to make a recording and then obtain the recorded (time-domain) samples for analysis? Ideally I would import them into Matlab, but Audacity would also be ok. Does the BatSound Touch Lite SW or SonoBat Live SW enable this?

On the iOS the recordings are straightforward using a recording app called Ultrasonic Analyzer. These are simple recordings that manually trigger. This app saves .wav fies that can then be opened for real analysis in Matlab or Audacity. BatSound Touch Lite and SonoBatLIVE are PC only recording apps, though they dip into some analysis themselves, they are really more of a recording app.
