The AR180-EXT is a professional quality ultrasonic receiver that is designed for ultrasonic recording and acoustic analysis. It employs a directional, wide bandwidth ultrasonic element along with ultrasonic to digital conversion technology to produce a high quality, digitally sampled, acoustic stream that is injected directly into a laptop computer or field recorder to perform ultrasonic monitoring, and analysis.
The AR180-EXT system is specifically designed for bat monitoring applications which require that the detector is mounted quite a distance away from the recording device. The system consists of an ultrasonic microphone element and a ultrasonic digitizer unit. The two units are separable up to 250 feet and are connected using industry standard CAT-5e or CAT-6 cable.
The AR180-EXT is shipped with a 20 foot cable. Longer cables can also be supplied, but with an additional charge

- Passive monitoring; the AR180EXT is housed in a robust weatherproof housing more appropriate for inclement weather.
- Orient this microphone horizontally to minimize moisture into the microphone element. Raise this microphone as far as possible from all obstructions (~12'+ above ground) and extend it into the airspce you intend to monitor.

I’m leaning towards the AR180EXT, as it seems the most robust option and we want this to work in the long-term. All of the others seem a little risky, and we are installing this in a remote location in Northern Ontario, where conditions are harsh! I am thinking we’ll probably need to uninstall it in the winter time. Am I right in thinking the BAT microphones could be refurbished (at some expense lower than complete replacement)?
I took apart a BAT mic once by accident and it’s very simple. The golden mic element up front is what is exposed to the weather and it is very easy to replace. It’s just 2 wires and it’s disconnected if I recall. Get the mic up high and angle it horizontal or down a touch, use conservative trigger settings so as to avoid the trash and the data burden will be manageable. I put mine in a tube recessed just a little bit. The AR125/150 is strongly directional by default so you can get away with putting an extra enclosure around it a little more than other mics. All my wires are totally encased in pvc conduit on that one. I still worry about wasps building nests in the mic enclosure you might consider filling any gaps with something so there is no space for insects to make homes.

Hi, we are looking for bat calls in frequency ranges up to 150 kHz. I see that this unit has an operating range up to 180 kHz but would this be the analysis frequency range or the recording sample rate? Our current recorders record at 384 kHz to allow for analysis up to ~192 kHz.
The AR180-EXT sample rate would be 360 kHz and the highest frequency it can resolve is 180 kHz. It is intended for very long deployments in harsh environments where just the microphone is exposed.
