By sound and not by sight. The BATSCANNER is available in stereo! In addition to the many things that give this device the advantage over other heterodyne detectors, the stereo edition (using 2 omnidirectional microphones) now allows users who want the extra “edge” to determine which direction the detected bat is coming from, and where it may be flying to. This is especially useful when a bat cannot be seen and users would like to try to “follow” a bat by aiming the detector toward the bat in flight. Intended to be used with headphones or earbuds with a pretty standard 3.5mm connector (not included). See our video here.
What do bats sound like? You don’t need a computer to use a BatScanner. Simply walk outside at dusk, away from motion lights, and you’ll hear “ticks” as bats are searching for moths. The “ticks” will increase into a “buzz” when they attack an insect. You will see the bat suddenly & dramatically change direction during this “buzz”... that’s the moth trying to evade capture and the bat making split-second course corrections! If you see bats at dusk, you will easily hear them with the BatScanner; and with the stereo model you will hear them in all directions, which is a incredible experience even long after it is too dark to see. Learn more about how bats use ultrasound.
Detect bat calls easier than ever. The BATSCANNER is a compact, user-friendly real-time bat detector. The built-in live monitoring (digital heterodyne) converter tunes to different bat call frequencies automatically. This eliminates the need for any kind of manual adjustment so that the user can focus on listening, rather than actively trying to tune in to individual bats.
No laptop, tablet, or smartphone is needed to enjoy a BATSCANNER. This is ideal for actually WATCHING bats at dusk as opposed to being glued to screens. Perfect for environmental education where handing the public a tablets for a bat walk might not be feasible.
Turn on. Listen. The ultrasonic sounds are automatically transformed into the audible range. The device listens continuously, and instantly displays the peak frequency of the detected signal while crystal clear sound is generated through the front-facing speaker. For more private listening, the BATSCANNER is also equipped with a single 3.5mm jack so that headphones may be used when desired.
The automatic frequency tuning offers many advantages over other heterodynes:
-
AUTOMATIC MODE: The mixing frequency is adjusted and displayed automatically for the detected bat species. Thus, the different bat species can be heard without manual tuning and its main frequency can be seen easily. Immediate display of the main frequency, even with only a brief flyby. This also helps to get a first estimation of the species.
- Miss no bat just because the wrong frequency is tuned.
- No tedious searching for the optimal setting, which is especially helpful in the dark!
- Built-in loudspeaker is optimized to avoid feedback loops.
- Identical sensitivity as the Elekon BATLOGGER.
- MANUAL MODE: The mixing frequency can be adjusted manually. Only bat species in the set frequency range can be heard.
- BATSCANNERS are heterodyne detectors which have a longer range than other detector types. The output is not used to display visually, because it is always a fraction of the original bat call. See more explanation on the types of bat detectors here.
Crickets and noise from walking can be a nuisance when observing with bat detectors. The BATSCANNER minimizes this problem by a special handling of lower frequencies. With the single press of the “on” button users can “reset” the frequency to eliminate any potentially unwanted noise.
The compact size, shape, and durability of this detector make it ideal for kids, educators, wildlife hobbyists, or those involved with outdoor interpretive program, making it a great option from our line of affordable, consumer-grade bat detectors. Comfortable, lightweight, and great for the evening walk or those on the go, the BATSCANNER is the ideal companion for your next bat excursion! How does this device help you identify the bats? Are there resources that help you determine which bat emits which frequency? Or is this unit more suited to "just listening" to the bats?
The device gives you a indication of the loudest ultrasound frequency it is picking up. Depending on the species assemblage of your area, you can sometimes assume the species. For example, if it reads 20 kHz and you are in any northern state, Hawaii, or Canada, that will almost always be a hoary bat as there are no other bats that echolocate that low. If it reads 40 kHz in the same region, it might be any one of the 4 members in the myotis-guild. Take recording location into context; if near a big river it may be a little brown myotis, as they are most likely to be over large bodies of water. I have a ecolocation guide I can send upon request please email me jchenger@batmanagement.com

Does the Batscanner in Stereo indicate the input decibel level? If so, kindly provide me with the input range, (eg. 0-125 db, etc). Thank you
Hi the BatScanner and BatScanner Stereo's output is the strongest recorded frequency in kHz in real time. In all regions this at least tells you a guild of bats that you're dealing with, and depending on your local species assemblage, could also tell you what species. There is no db meter, though I suppose the audio-out port could be connected to laptop or smartphone analysis software that -would- tell you this. This is a great device for when you want to evesdrop on bats but don't want to bother with making recordings or fool with smartphones/tablets/laptops. The Stereo model when used with headphones puts bats in 3D space around you; very cool.
