Detect bat calls easier than ever. The BATSCANNER is a compact, user-friendly real-time bat detector. The built-in live monitoring (digital heterodyne) converter tunes to different bat call frequencies automatically. This eliminates the need for any kind of manual adjustment so that the user can focus on listening, rather than actively trying to tune in to individual bats.

Turn on. Listen. The ultrasonic sounds are automatically transformed into the audible range. The device listens continuously, and instantly displays the peak frequency of the detected signal while crystal clear sound is generated through the front-facing speaker. For more private listening, the BATSCANNER is also equipped with a single 3.5mm jack so that headphones may be used when desired.

The automatic frequency tuning offers many advantages over other heterodynes:

  • Automatic mode: The mixing frequency is adjusted and displayed automatically for the detected bat species. Thus, the different bat species can be heard without manual tuning and its main frequency can be seen easily. Immediate display of the main frequency, even with only a brief flyby. This also helps to get a first estimation of the species.

  • Miss no bat just because the wrong frequency is tuned.
  • No tedious searching for the optimal setting, which is especially helpful in the dark!
  • Built-in loudspeaker is optimized to avoid feedback loops.
  • Identical sensitivity as the Elekon BATLOGGER.
  • MANUAL MODE: The mixing frequency can be adjusted manually. Only bat species in the set frequency range can be heard.
  • BATSCANNERS are heterodyne detectors which have a longer range than other detector types. The output is not used to display visually, because it is always a fraction of the original bat call. See more explanation on the types of bat detectors here.

Crickets and noise from walking can be a nuisance when observing with bat detectors. The BATSCANNER minimizes this problem by a special handling of lower frequencies. With the single press of the “on” button users can “reset” the frequency to eliminate any potentially unwanted noise.

By sound and not by sight. The BATSCANNER is also available in stereo! In addition to the many things that give this device the advantage over other heterodyne detectors, the stereo edition (using 2 omnidirectional microphones) now allows users who want the extra “edge” to determine which direction the detected bat is coming from, and where it may be flying to. What states does sales tax apply?
If products are shipped to PA, you will be charged sales tax. When you enter your shipping address to any other state, the PA sales tax is removed. 

I am tax exempt, federal/state/tribal buyer located in PA, how do I purchase?
Tax Exempt Businesses/Organizations in PA only: create an account here: https://batmanagement.com/account/register  and then email us with your account name, order items quantities, shipping and billing address, and include your tax exempt number. You will then be sent a link to your order which you can pay online normally. We will also set your account to be tax-exempt so that future orders from that account can be made without extra steps. 

I am tax exempt, federal/state/tribal buyer located outside of PA, how do I purchase?
Simply add items to your cart and checkout. When you enter your shipping address outside of PA, the PA sales tax will be removed. BCM does not collect tax for any other states. It is not necessary to contact us with tax-exempt paperwork, etc. if you are outside of PA.

Do you accept Purchase Orders (PO)?
We accept POs from recognized US based organizations for items shipped domestically. We reserve the right to refuse any PO. There may be a 10% service fee applied to all POs. 

Can I cancel attending a workshop/event?
Full refunds are given if cancelled 28 days prior to the start of an event. Event registrations are transferable. For more details please see the Workshop Training General Info & Cancellation Policy 

What can I return?
You may return new, unopened items sold within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Shirts, hats, and mugs are made to order and are not returnable.

When will I get my refund?
Most refunds are fully refunded in 3-5 business days after we receive and process your return.

Does BCM do replacements?
We can only replace the exact item and version you ordered, and you are responsible to return the damaged item within 30 days. If you want to exchange for a different item, you will need to return the item and place a new order.

Pettersson D500x and M500 Bat Detectors Return and Exchange Policy
All detectors are tested by BCM staff before shipping to customers. Please contact BCM first detailing the issue you are having with the hardware and obtain a Return Authorization. Should email or phone troubleshooting fail to resolve the issue, you should send the unit in suitable packaging to BCM, with the RA number written on the packaging.

BCM will confirm the unit is defective was not abused or water damaged. BCM will replace the unit at our discretion usually within one week. Units requiring repairs may take 6-8 weeks.

Pettersson factory warranty is one year.

D500x External Microphone Return Policy
All microphones are tested by BCM staff before shipping to customers. Please contact BCM first detailing the issue you are having with the Microphone and obtain a Return Authorization. Should email or phone troubleshooting fail to resolve the issue, you should send the unit in suitable packaging to BCM, with the RA number written on the packaging.

DOA microphones are replaced immediately at no charge. There is a $150 for refurbishing used microphones, shipped immediately if in stock.

Electronics
Electronics purchased from BCM are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. These items must be in new condition with original packaging and accessories. All bat detectors sold by BCM are supported by the device's manufacturers. In the unlikely event a detector appears to be defective, please contact the customer support network for the computer manufacturer to have it serviced under warranty. Pettersson D500x/M500 devices have specific policies, see above.

Software
Software titles purchased from BCM are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. These items must be unopened and still in their plastic wrap.

General items

Other items purchased from BCM can only be returned if:

  • The return is packaged and shipped in the original packaging.
  • The items are still in new condition.
  • You ship your return within 30 days of receipt of the original shipment.

Any returns that do not meet the above qualifications may receive a reduced refund or be returned to the purchaser. Some items may incur a restocking fee as these items must be inspected, tested, and repackaged. If a restocking fee applies it will be noted on the product information page.  All returns will be less original shipping costs.

  • With the Elekon BATSCANNER, could one use the headphone jack to go to a recording device? If so, could that output also be stereo?

    Yes if stereo Y adapter is used, you can split the signal into two cables for 2 people to listen simultaneously, or send one line to a recording device. -JC

  • Does the elekon batscanner give me the species of bat I am listening to?

    Hello Bruce- this detector gives you the strongest frequency of ultrasound it last monitored in the environment. From that, given context of the species assemblage in your local area combined with the habitat you are in, you can sometimes guesstimate the species. For example ~21-30 kHz in most Gulf states would probably be Mexican free tail bats. ~42 kHz in FL would be the Southeastern myotis; however, ~42 kHz in northern states might be any one of up to 6 different myotis species in one area, and so the best than can be done in those areas is to loosely group them as "40 kHz Myotis". There are currently only two devices that can give a visual representation of the bat calls and attempts to name species; we prefer SonoBatLIVE as it is more professional and accurate. It requires a Windows 10 laptop, tablet, or mini computer to run, and also an ultrasonic microphone. The least expensive microphone compatible is the Pettersson u384 or M500-384. Most microphones from Binary Acoustics works as well, with the least expensive being the MiniMic. As a bonus any of these mics can be used with an Android app called Batrecorder, although files recorded would need post processed using the SonoBat Viewer to obtain species suggestions. The SonoBat North America is a professional package that includes the Viewer, SonoBatLIVE, and the Data Wizard, as well as a number of legacy apps for special purposes.

  • Hi. I was wondering if this could be used inside of a home. We purchased a large, very old home, and know that occasionally a bat pops inside. We want to be able to safely shoo them along as we continue to renovate, but we don't know they are there until they surprise us - and are surprised by us in return. We have had a few construction staffers quit over the encounters. Looking to keep all creatures safe and happy! Might this work for us?

    Bat "detectors" actually don't "detect" bats like a metal detector "detects" metal. These devices convert high-frequency bat calls into sounds we can hear and record. It won't help you find bats in a building but might help clue you in as to where they are flying outside a house. Bats generally will only be calling when they are flying.- JC
