Simple and Versatile Bat Detection.

Listen to bats in real-time! The Baton is a simple but versatile “frequency division” bat detector that allows the listener to hear the ultrasound produced by echolocating bats. The Bat Baton is sensitive to frequencies from 20 kHz to 120 kHz. It has a division factor of 10, meaning the sounds of a 50kHz bat is reduced to only 5kHz—well within the range of human hearing! These calls are captured through the microphone located at the top of the baton, and then emitted through the front-facing speaker.

What do bats sound like? You don’t need a computer to use a Baton. Simply walk outside at dusk, away from motion lights and other sources of ultrasound, and you’ll hear “ticks” as bats are searching for moths. The “ticks” will increase into a “buzz” when they attack an insect. You will see the bat suddenly & dramatically change direction during this “buzz”... that’s the moth trying to evade capture and the bat making split-second course corrections! If you see bats at dusk, you will easily hear them with the Baton, even long after it is too dark to see. Learn more about how bats use ultrasound.

The Baton works best in quiet environments, away from electronics, wind, people rustling around, etc. It actually is a great inexpensive tool to show just how "noisy" the world is that humans cannot hear. For private listening, the 3.5mm jack allows the use of headphones (use headphones with volume control, if possible), as well as provides the ability to connect directly to the computer to use with the included Batscan software. Calls can also be recorded on other devices such as MP3 or minidisc for later analysis. The Baton is also ideal for listening to orthoptera (grasshoppers and crickets) whose communication is in the upper part of, or above human hearing. One PP3 9V battery lasts for up to 30hrs (alkaline).

The Batbox Baton is ideal for:

  • Wildlife hobbyists
  • Educators
  • Interpretive programs
  • Bat Enthusiasts

Although the built in speaker may not produce enough volume to effectively demonstrate to a large group, the Baton performs very well in small group setting and when passed around during interpretive programs, especially when the idea of passing around a fragile tablet is not realistic.

The real advantage is the Baton’s frequency division technology with the real time sonograms. This really allows you to not only hear the bats go by but also "see" them, save them, and would be an introduction to the acoustic world of bats without investing in an expensive unit. Learn more about the different types of bat detectors.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask BCM a Question
  • An elderly lady living in New Jersey with some pet parrots is having a problem with a neighbor who gets up at 6 am and blows some kind of whistle until 9 am. Now, the lady cannot hear the whistle, but her birds do hear it. The talking birds will say: My ears hurt! My ears hurt! when that is happening. The elderly lady knows this neighbor is blowing the whistle because she can see her in her car when she arrives home in the afternoon and the birds start screaming. Apparently they are able to hear this whistle and it is quite irritating. But it is emitting a high pitched sound that humans cannot hear but the birds can hear. So, I am wondering if you have ever heard of this kind of whistle and if you have any type of recording device that will record it so it can be played and heard by humans.

I have been getting an increasing number of questions similar to this. The short answer is yes, I could sell you a solution hat allows you to see a real-time response of ultrasound as you wave a microphone around. The microphone I would suggest is the M500-384, is ~$400, and must connect to a Windows 10 device or smartphone. Interpreting the signals might be tricky; many things in a house can generate ultrasound and will be picked up by the microphone. That said, with some practice you can pin down the source of the sound and make recordings. However, I would say this is more of a law enforcement issue and the lady should first file a complaint with the local police who will visit the neighbor and perhaps that will be enough for the activity to stop. Ultrasound at high enough dB to travel between apartments is dangerous to human hearing for an extended time, even though we can't "hear" it, it is still harmful enough OSHA has set limits as to what safe levels are.

  • Is there way to get one bat detector for an enthusiast as an encourage for future studies on bats?Is it possible to request for a grant?

Hello- I'm afraid we do not offer grants. Depending on your location, etc. you might be able to borrow a device from us or other researchers. You might join facebook groups such as "North American Bat Biologists" or even our group "Backyard Bat Biologists" https://www.facebook.com/groups/687900871881857 and inquire about colunteer opportunities.

  • Does this pick up a range of frequencies? If so what is the range?

Hello- the Baton detector is sensitive between 20 kHz and up to 120 kHz. Any ultrasound in this range, within the range of the microphone, will be divided down into the human audible range in real time. The divided sound is played using the small onboard speaker or headphones (headphones with volume control are recommended.)

  • To use the analysis software how do you record the sound or transfer it to a computer? As in what kind of cable is required? Also could you use this with software on a laptop real time in a park or does it need to be connected to the internet?

The Baton connects to other devices using a 3.5mm headphone jack... think just about every headphone/earbud ever made... search "3.5mm audio cable" on Amazon and you will find these with male plugs on both ends. While the Baton can easily be handheld, you can use a long cable on an extention pole and get it up off the ground 10' or more closer to bats and further from ground based noise, and the recordings will significantly improve. The Baton or software does not connect to the internet. You can record into other smart devices with the proper app and cable, not just into a laptop. The included software is fun for a quick visualization of the bat calls, but for high end analysis software such as SonoBat is used with more sensitivite microphones. -JC

  • Hello, Will i be able to plug this into my camcorder (XA11) - would these call then be able to be analysed afterwards? (I presume they would save as an MP3 over the video footage and could be extracted that way?)

With the right audio adapter you can connect this detector to the mic-line in on the camera. I suppose it could be then replayed into the line-in mic port on a computer running the BatScan software to visualize the calls. These recordings cannot be analyized using high end bat software like SonoBat/KaPRO/Insight, but could be viewed using general audio analysis apps like Audacity. The Baton also performs best when in a very quiet environment.

  • Does thus device pick up the sound of a special whistle used to drive indoor birds crazy?? Please help my birds are being tortured. Bexotic@aol.com.

It will pick up ultrasound generally from about 10 kHz up to over 120 kHz, so if it is an animal or other noise in that range, and is relatively nearby, then yes.

  • Will this batbox baton pick up sounds made by those whistles,(that make sounds that cannot be heard by humans), thatused to communicate with animals?

It will pick up ultrasound generally from about 10 kHz up to over 120 kHz, so if it is an animal or other noise in that range, and is relatively nearby, then yes.

  • Will the batbox detect the sounds made by special whistles that make ultrasounds? I need to be able to detect these whistle sounds and show them because a friend's neighbor is using these ultrasound whistles to disturb her birds and animals...the parrots will even say...my ears hurt...when this neighbor blows the whistle...This neighbor has been seen with the whistle in her mouth!

Yes the Baton will record these sounds. Onscreen you will see "normal" ambient noise displayed, but when the "whistle" is played, there will suddenly be a strong, fairly constant new "noise band" appear with a fairly constant frequency. The Baton benifits being in a quiet, stationary location, so if you are walking around with it there will be lots of "noise", but when the whistle blows you will obviously see it. You can test this using "dog whistle" apps on your smartphone, keeping in mind the physical whistle will be many times more powerful (easier to record) than the speaker test on your smartphone. -JC

  • Hi! I’m going to be adopting some pet rats later this summer, and in my research I learned that rats make a lot of ultrasonic sounds (20-50kHz) - including many of their more joyful sounds, like “laughing” when being tickled or playing. I thought it would be cool to be able to hear them and be more aware of their full range of expression, and thus I came across bat detectors! The BatBox Baton is probably the best suited for my purposes, given that I can leave it on while I play with my rats and listen in, but I thought I’d ask for your thoughts! Have you ever heard of someone using bat detectors for rats or other companion animals before?

Hello - yes reseearchers are using "bat" detectors for many other purposes... study of flying squirrels and rodents. While the Baton will give you an instant visual representation of the ultrasound, it works best in quiet environments. You might consider the Pettersson u256, although that ties up a smartphone or tablet- though a suitable Android phone can be had for $100. However, if you mount the Baton in the enclosure near the animal and refrain from touching it, possibly in a glass enclosure like an aquarium that will be shielding ultrasound caused by otherthings in the room, it might be a neat setup. Things like flourencent lights, motion detectors, computers, any many other things make a lot of ultrasound.

  • Is this product available and do you ship to Canada

Hello- the Batbox Batons are in stock, simply add them to your shopping cart. You can then enter your shipping address for a quote before your credit card is charged. YThanks!

  • Is it possible to set this device up to run unattended overnight and then review the acoustic recordings at a later time?

In theroy, yes. The best I would expect on a regular basis is to ID low F bats from hi F bats. Professional recordings and analysis should be done with a Pettersson M500-384 microphone and the included BatSoundTouch software, or the optional SonoBatLIVE/SonoBat analysis package.

  • Can the software on the USB drive be purchased separately?

Hi the software can be purchased here: https://www.batbox.com/product/bat-scan/

  • Can this be used with an Iphone?

No. For various setups/software/hacks with this and similar devices  you might try asking on the facebook group Backyard Bat Biologists or Bat Call Analysis Workshop.

  • Is the earpiece included?

Hello- The Baton does not ship with headphones; it uses the super common 3.5 mm headphone jack; the same as many laptops, etc. While you can get headphones as cheap as $5 you might consider ones for a little more that include a volume control in-line. -JC
