Mobile Transect Meetup Mayhem at FLBWG 2020

Product Description
$0.00
Maximum quantity available reached.
Mobile Transect Meetup Mayhem! You do not need to be attending the FLBWG meeting to take advantage of this event, it is open to anyone. NOTE: when registering for this event, please only one participant per order! We need individual emails for each participant to keep everyone informed of the field trip instructions. When the trip is full, you will no longer be able to register below.

What: Depending on group interest and other logistics, meet BCM's Master of Mayhem John Chenger at the Withlacoochee State Forest - Silver Lake Day Use Area on Silver Lake Road (Latitude 28° 34.7286 - Longitude 82° 13.0392) to coordinate mounting your bat detectors (or loaners) on vehicles and/or kayaks. There is a $2 day use fee per vehicle. We will then take a predetermined course literally trolling for bats from either cars or boats, or both, for 1-2 hours.

When: Monday March 2, 2020 meeting at 5:30 for final gear distribution and route suggestions. The survey and gear should be wrapped up around 9:30.

What to Bring for the Driving Transect: A high-occupancy vehicle is preferred so those interested in a driving transect may consolidate and carpool for the actual survey. Any modern passive bat detector will work. SonoBatLIVE and EchometerTouch devices are fine but for best results the microphone must be cabled ~5' above the vehicle. John has loaner detectors and mounting poles if needed. A GPS is required in each survey car (smartphone apps work great) and must export a .GPX track. John will have several route suggestions you can preload into your device. A headlamp is needed at some point. There is a group of bat houses near the Silver Lake meet point which makes a great transect starting location. Bring a video camera & tripod to catch the emergence, then start the transect!

What to Bring for the Withlacoochee Floating Transect: A limited amount of kayak space is available, first come, first serve. Or bring your own kayak or canoe. The river alternates between slow moving water and pools, is narrow in places, and hazards such as trees and shallows are guaranteed. If bringing your own watercraft, a white night light and PFD is required. Any modern passive bat detector in a dry bag will work. SonoBatLIVE and EchometerTouch devices are fine for the backseat driver of a tandem boat, or mounted to the boat somehow, but most people can't hold a tablet and a paddle at the same time. For best results all microphones must be cabled 6' or more above the water. Boats rigged for fishing work best. John has loaner detectors and mounting poles if needed. A group GPS is required (smartphone apps work great) and must export a .GPX track. Bring your own active detector, a good headlamp, headphones/earbuds, shoes that can get wet, possibly a light jacket, and a spotlight.

Feeling hungry? No food or drink provided, so bring your own snacks.

Then what? After the transect is complete, we reconvene at a hotel nearby that night, or Tuesday at the Withlacoochee Training Center, the site of the FL Bat Working Group meeting for the next two days. (Note: there is no lodging at the Training Center Monday night.)  John will consolidate all the transect data with the goal to demonstrate the workflow used to post process transects and produce snazzy-looking maps. So yes, we will actually try to do something with this data, and it's always a great exercise in comparing different mic and detector setups.

Cost: $2 day use fee per car if parking at the Day Use Area.
