It is like gaining an extra f-stop on a still camera. However, to realize another increase in light, you would need to double again: four IR lamps. That is getting a bit unwieldily in the field. Also be aware that newer "widescreen" aspect HD cameras are shooting such a wide 16:9 aspect ratio landscape image, you will need two IR lamps to feather across the field of view and fully fill the frame. If you are shooting standard 4:3 aspect video, one IR lamp will fill the frame. Forcing a modern camera into 4:3 aspect ratio means you will be giving up the advantage of the wide angle lens on the camera and may have to be further away from your subject, possibly making it more difficult to light.

Camera recommendations? Camera models are refreshed as quickly as every 6 months and BCM makes no attempt to maintain a list of current state-of-the-art models with the NightShot feature.

NIGHTSHOT FUNCTION: first and foremost this feature must be included or you simply cannot film in IR light. IRLamp6 Base Kit- Infrared Light for Sony, Canon, and CCTV cameras with infrared night mode

Product Description
This IRLamp Kit includes the minimum lights, battery, cables, and bracket necessary to create an infrared light stand flexible for creative videographers.
One Kit includes:
 • Your choice of two (2) Wide or Standard angle beam IRLamp6 illuminators
 • Two (2) Lamp power cables
 • One (1) "Y" power splitter
 • One (1) 12V/11000mAh 9V/14500mAh 5V/26400mAh DC Output lithium ion battery w/ charger
 • One (1) lamp bracket holding two lights, or one camera and one light
 • One (1) storage pouch that contains everything above

Provide your own mini or small tripod, and use rubber bands or velcro straps, etc. to attach the battery temporarily to the tripod. You now have a portable light stand that can be positioned for off camera illumination or backlighting. Use 2 or 3 of these setups mixing both Wide and Standard beams for creative photography and the most flexibility on site.

If you need just one lamp to supplement your existing system, we offer single lamps here.

Note: The supplied lamp bracket holds two lights, or one camera and one light. It is possible to add an appropriate screw and use two IRLamp6 plus a camera on the bar simultaneously. The lights must be staggered 1 "up" and 1 "down" for this configuration. However, off camera lighting is highly recommended except in situations where the lights must be next to the camera lens in order to illuminate small, deep crevices.

IRLamp6 - Light for consumer DV cameras. IRLamp6 is an incredibly bright IR source for field use. It offers 40 high performance IR LEDs in a specially designed heat sink case. At less than three inches in diameter, the lamp takes up very little room in a backpack. This lamp is exclusively sold by Bat Conservation and Management, Inc. Design elements of IRLamp6 arrays are:

 • Compact and field rugged -film production quality
 • Designed for photogrphy with no undesirable "hot spot" of light in the image.
 • Works with Sony NightShot mode and Canon Infrared mode, but also any other camera with near IR features as well as CCTV surveillance cameras with night vision capability.
 • Completely solid state, no filaments to burn out.
 • LEDs with 10,000 hour lifetime.
 • Efficient use of battery power, puts far more of the energy into light, minimizes waste so you carry a smaller battery.
 • One lamp draws 500 mill-amps from a 12VDC source
 • Produces bright light with an even beam angle suited to most video cameras.
 • The wavelength of the light is just long enough to not be visually disturbing to most wildlife, but short enough to fall within the sensitivity of most video cameras. Peak wavelength is 810 nm.
 • Input voltage designed to use common and easily charged 12V lithium-ion, sealed lead-acid batteries, or vehicle power systems.
 • An under voltage lockout circuit (~8V) turns off the lamp when the battery is exhausted, avoiding over-discharge of the battery.
 • Mounted with a common 1/4"-20 thread standard on photographic tripods
 • Lamp is not powered thru the camera, an external power source is required.
 • 5 Ah battery will run one illuminator for 9 hours, 2 illuminators for approximately 4 hours.
 • IRLamp6 purchased before August 2020 use 5.5mmx2.5mm power plugs. IRLamp6 purchased AFTER August 2020 use 5.5mmx2.1mm power plugs, compatible with a wider selection is readily available lithium-ion battery packs and inexpensive cables for CCTV cameras.

"I have a few lights from the less expensive competitor. The light stand fell over and the mount broke instantly due to the cheap 3D printed plastic. They also lack a heat sink so life expectancy probably isn't as long as the IRLamp6. The light fall off at the edges is more pleasing with the IRLamp6. I am reminded of the saying 'you get what you pay for' and am sticking with the IRLamp6."

Standard beam, Wide beam, and Power

 • The 20 degree standard beam will resolve bats up to about 100 feet. This range is highly dependent on which camera you use (Sony cameras vary with the NightShot quality; the larger the CCD the better) and the zoom setting of the lens. This beam can fill a 4:3 aspect frame, but not the 16:9 widescreen. Use two standard beam lampsand feather them slightly to fill a 16:9 frame.
 • The 40 degree wide beam can fill a 16:9 frame at wide angle, especially useful if your subject is close. Frankly, we carry both versions on every shoot and often mix the lamps, using the Wide Beam but adding Standard Beams to throw more light into dark areas, such as the back of a pond, for example.
 • Each lamp comes with one 2.5x2.1mm male to male power cord 24'' long. Add 2.1mm "Y" power splitter to run more than 1 lamp from a single battery.
 • We recommended this "small" 6000 mAh lithium-ion battery for one light (9+ hours) or two lights (4+ hours).
 • For longer runtime, we recommend this "medium" 11500 mAh lithium-ion battery for almost twice the run time, handy for when recharging between shoots may not be immediately convenient.

Why we're impressed: Bat Conservation and Management, Inc. has been using IRLamp6 illuminators for several years now. Coupled with appropriate Sony NighShot-enabled cameras, this system actually provides sharper images than when recorded thorough our $5,000 ITT G3 night vision scope. We are proud to offer these devices along side our other high end, hand selected bat survey equipment. There is no brighter IR illuminator in the world specifically designed for the NightShot system, period.

Why two lamps? Adding a second lamp does not significantly increase the size and weight of your pack, but it doubles the amount of light available to the camera.

Check the Sony specs for NightShot mode, and even the manufacturer's photos of the camera to verify there is NightShot button on the exterior (usually under the fold out LCD display. Only the high-end consumer grade Sony cameras have this feature. Certain Canon camcorders have a similar feature called "Infrared" mode.

Sensor size is always found in the tech specs of the camera.

HARD DRIVE/SD CARD: Old NightShot-capable cameras may record to DVD or Mini-DV formats, these are cumbersome to use with modern digital video workflows for archiving and editing purposes and probably should be avoided if you are editing video on a regular basis.

CAMERA SETTINGS: Generally speaking, use at least 1080 movie size, or larger. The data rate should always be set to the highest possible "recording quality". "Low Lux" feature, if equipt, should be on (newer cameras are so sensitive you may experiment with this off if the subject is close). Anytime a tripod is used, "Steadyshot" should be off. Once your image is in focus, press the "manual focus" button to lock it in place and keep the camera from inadvertantly attempting to focus on passing insects, etc.

LIGHTING TIP: If you use "off camera lighting" techniques by placing lamps 3' or more away from the camera, the textures/shadows this generates will give your video a more 3-dimensional look rather than a flatly lit scene. This also reduces or eliminates "floating ghost orbs" caused by the light hitting out-of-focus dust particles near the lens or bright flashes of movement cause by a moth buzzing by.
