Importance of Bats and Citizen Science Ideas is a 45 minute program introducing the diverse and ecologically important roles bat play around the world. Quite fitting to be held at Canoe Creek State Park, probably the most heavily studied park for bats in Pennsylvania. Night activities include a mist net demo where a few bat might be captured, a night vision camera demo, and an acoustic monitoring demonstration, where we will attempt to eavesdrop on bats calling using speciality microphones. There will also be an opportunity to view and discuss bat houses. This program is produced by Bat Conservation and Management.

 

Cost: no fee

Recommended ages 8+

What to bring for the 6:00 presentation: no special dress is suggested as this is an indoor program.

What to bring for the 7:30 night demonstration: a headlamp or flashlight, hiking shoes, long pants, and a snack and water is recommended, especially for kids! Also consider a camera, camp chair, and possibly insect repellent. Instructions on where to meet for the evening demonstration will be provided, it may be a short drive within the Park and involve a short walk to a staging area. Visiting the actual trap site is optional and may be off trail involving uneven ground, short steep slopes, water, mud, poison ivy, and/or thorny vegetation. Bat surveyors will operate very late into the evening, participants are welcome to stay as long as they wish.
