It is particularly suited for a species such as the federally endangered Florida bonneted bat. Florida bonneted bats and some other species prefer small harem families and may not take advantage of large multi-chamber bat houses. Since it is located in the southern half of Florida, this single chamber bat house will get plenty warm enough to sustain bonneted bats year-round. If targeting bonneted bats or Mexican/Brazillian free tail bats, mount 15'-18' or more above ground in as wide open a space as possible. Of course, other species may use this bat house as well, particularly Mexican/Brazilian free tails and big brown bats found around all the Gulf Coast states and NM, AZ, and low elevations of CA. Further north we suggest this bat house if you already have an occupied bat house nearby, or are planning to mount onto a building. Because single chamber bat houses lack the thermal mass of larger structures, it is best to mount on buildings in cooler climates. In these areas big brown bats and a number of different Myotis-class bats may use this bat house. Because of the low cost and easy mounting, several DayRoost bat houses are perfect to place in several locations around your property, with somewhat different solar exposures. This dramatically increases the chances of initially training bats to a bat house and discovering what exposure your local bats are looking for.

We have assembled all the elements of the DayRoost for you. The exterior is tough 1/2'' thick plywood with all seams glued and sealed during assembly. The roof is a single black 1/2'' thick slab of recycled plastic, which will resist weathering for decades. A block of wood in the roof buffers bats from extreme heat, and releases heat more slowly thru the evening. Our iconic decorative bat design on the front is actually a vent that helps prevents bats from overheating. When used with our Post Mount Kit, or appropriate spacers against a building, rear vents on the DayRoost allow bats to exit out the back to cool off, but are still protected from predators.

No drilling or screw driving is required except when mounting to a post or building. Each interior surface has been permanently roughened by hand in various directions for the best "batholds" possible. in North America.

Handmade in Pennsylvania by BCM, this is a very solid plywood bat house with a virtually indestructible recycled black plastic roof.

  • Single Chamber - mount on buildings for best results
  • Recycled plastic roof - unbeatable durability
  • Interior permanently roughened in random directions, better for bats!
  • 1/2'' Exterior Plywood - paint and hang it!
  • Experiment with multiple DayRoosts and attract bats into a new area
  • Perfect for a low cost, very solid bat house, made in USA
  • Approved by Merlin Tuttle's Bat Conservation

This Single Chamber DayRoost may attract more than a dozen bat species in North America.

We DO NOT use screen material for baffles as it has been shown to shred over time and pups can become trapped under it. This box should be painted appropriately for your area, and generally plan on black or a shade of brown (see color chart for your area). Includes our manual with complete finishing, site determination, installation, and maintenance instructions.

Approved by Merlin Tuttle's Bat Conservation. Created and built in south-central Pennsylvania. We have Mount Kits available for attaching this bat house to a post, siding, or brick/stone which will add another chamber of roost space.

How to finish this bat house:

  1. Paint or stain a color according to your climate (see manual). Use 3 or more coats. Thick paint or stain will fill in the bath olds on the landing plate; avoid painting this area or re-introduce more scratch marks after painting using a utility knife.
  2. Screw the bat house to the pole mount and a 4''x4''x16' or 4''x6''x16' post (~$45 at local lumber yards). Alternately make a warp-resistant post by fastening two 2''x6''x16' PT boards together. Cement 2.5'-3' into the ground, or attach to the sunny side of a structure. Metal telescoping poles sold by bird house vendors are too flimsy for any of our bat houses.
  3. Say "Just add bats!"

Bat house and installation overview can be seen in our online Learning Center section All About Bat Houses. Specific installation instructions included the ColonyLodge manual and "How-To" videos. See our Resources & Free Advice for additional step-by-step instructions on how to mount this bat house on a post or building.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask BCM a Question
  • Would the DayRoost - Single Chamber bat house be suitable for the types of bats we get in southern Ontario? (hoary bat, the eastern red bat, the silver-haired bat, the big brown bat, the tricolored bat, the little brown myotis bat, the northern long-eared myotis and the eastern small-footed myotis.)

Of all those only the big brown, little brown, Northern long ear, and maybe the tricolored bats are known to use artificial roosts such as bat houses. Any of the bat houses we sell might attract those species, but there is not guarantee with wildlife and it may take a few seasons before there is any activity. I would recommend mounting a single chamber bat house on a building for best chance, preferably one on the full sun side and perhaps one on the side that gets morning sun, then is shaded in afternoon.

  • I plan on a ColonyLodge unit for a Christmas present and thought I should have a second non-maternity type bat house for a bachelor pad on the back side. Is this a good thing to plan? If so, what do I need to buy for that purpose? A Day Roost?

There is no specific bat house for bachelors and they roost literally anywhere. The purpose of bat houses are primarily for females to raise young. The recommended approach is to install several bat houses in various solar exposures in an area. Direct morning sun is a must-have, and full day sun is also good. Your local bats will select what they need, and they may use all of the bat houses just at different times of the year. If you end up with a bad placement, such as trees shade out a bat house, you might get some bachelors in it, but they probably don’t “need” it. Back-to-back bat houses are generally more successful than a single bat house, probably because that configuration offers some different compartments to split up socially, and different temperatures. Honestly any bat house on the backside of another may be useful; there is no set rules in that area.

  • Can a bat house on a post be placed in a wooded area?

If you are in a warm climate, the Gulf Coast states for example, you may get Mexican free tails or Southeastern bats at various times of the year. If you are in a northern or high elevation climate, the bat house needs ~6 or more hours of -direct- morning sun to be warm enough for bats to consider using it. It may take several seasons for bats to use it, so patience is key. -JC

  • if we find we don't need the mounting kit can we return it for a refund?

Yes if returned within 30 days of purchase. Shipping is mot refundable.

  • what kind of paint should be used to paint the bat house? thanks!

Any exterior paint or stain is fine; whatever your hardware store recommends for outdoor plywood. You can also use black spray paint to spray intto the bottom of the bat house just to darken it down. Also can spray the edges of the mounts and Perch Panel for asthetics. Remember to re-scratch the landing area AND the rear of the bat house around the rear vent with a utility knife after painting, as thick paint will fill in the grooves.
