DayRoost - Single Chamber, Plywood, Fully-Assembled Bat House

This Single Chamber DayRoost may attract more than a dozen bat species in North America. It is particularly suited for a species such as the federally endangered Florida bonneted bat. Florida bonneted bats and some other species prefer small harem families and may not take advantage of large multi-chamber bat houses. Since it is located in the southern half of Florida, this single chamber bat house will get plenty warm enough to sustain bonneted bats year-round. If targeting bonneted bats or Mexican/Brazillian free tail bats, mount 15'-18' or more above ground in as wide open a space as possible. Of course, other species may use this bat house as well, particularly Mexican/Brazilian free tails and big brown bats found around all the Gulf Coast states and NM, AZ, and low elevations of CA. Further north we suggest this bat house if you already have an occupied bat house nearby, or are planning to mount onto a building. Because single chamber bat houses lack the thermal mass of larger structures, it is best to mount on buildings in cooler climates. In these areas big brown bats and a number of different Myotis-class bats may use this bat house. Because of the low cost and easy mounting, several DayRoost bat houses are perfect to place in several locations around your property, with somewhat different solar exposures. This dramatically increases the chances of initially training bats to a bat house and discovering what exposure your local bats are looking for.

We have assembled all the elements of the DayRoost for you. The exterior is tough 1/2'' thick plywood with all seams glued and sealed during assembly. The roof is a single black 1/2'' thick slab of recycled plastic, which will resist weathering for decades. A block of wood in the roof buffers bats from extreme heat, and releases heat more slowly thru the evening. Our iconic decorative bat design on the front is actually a vent that helps prevents bats from overheating. When used with our Post Mount Kit, or appropriate spacers against a building, rear vents on the DayRoost allow bats to exit out the back to cool off, but are still protected from predators. 

No drilling or screw driving is required except when mounting to a post or building. Each interior surface has been permanently roughened by hand in various directions for the best "batholds" possible. We DO NOT use screen material for baffles as it has been shown to shred over time and pups can become trapped under it. This box should be painted appropriately for your area, and generally plan on black or a shade of brown (see color chart for your area). Includes our manual with complete finishing, site determination, installation, and maintenance instructions.

Approved by Merlin Tuttle's Bat Conservation. Created and built in south-central Pennsylvania. We have Mount Kits available for attaching this bat house to a post, siding, or brick/stone which will add another chamber of roost space.

How to finish this bat house:

  1. Paint or stain a color according to your climate (see manual). Use 3 or more coats. Thick paint or stain will fill in the bath olds on the landing plate; avoid painting this area or re-introduce more scratch marks after painting using a utility knife.
  2. Screw the bat house to the pole mount and a 4''x6''x16' post (~$35 at local lumber yards) cemented 3' into the ground, or attach to the sunny side of a structure. Metal telescoping poles sold by bird house vendors are too flimsy for any of our bat houses.
  3. Say "Just add bats!"
