BCM SonoBat Workshop at SBDN 2019

Product Description
Bat Conservation and Management and SonoBat are offering bite-sized learning modules prior to the 2019 Southeast Bat Diversity Meeting in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday February 20. Early arrivals can get a full day's dose of SonoBat Joe Szewczak and BCM's John Chenger as they demonstrate the why and the how to effectively use the SonoBat 4 workflow on all of your bat acoustic data projects. You do not need to be attending the SBDN meeting to take advantage of this event, it is open to anyone. There are three modules planned:

Module 1: Simplifying Data Management by Using SonoBat From Recording to Report

When: Wednesday, February 20 from noon-2 PM. Arrive early for 1:1 time with Joe and John.
This will be a guided tour on how to use the SonoBatLIVE family of recorders with sophisticated GUANO integration for data management.  For legacy detectors such as all Wildlife Acoustics, Pettersson D500, and Binary Acoustics, we will demonstrate using the SonoBat Data Wizard to achieve the same level of metadata management, how to fix a number of common post-processing problems, and how to use the SonoBatch classify tool, explaining why you might deviate from default settings. We will introduce the SonoVet tool and produce an initial summary report.

GUANO (the data kind, or Grand Unified Acoustic Notation Ontology) provides a huge leap towards cleverly organizing bat detector data, customizing fields to suit your agency and projects, rapidly searching metadata, comparing data, and generating reports.

Module 2: Understanding Bat Call ID and Improving Your Acoustic Monitoring

When: Wednesday, February 20 from 3 PM to 5 PM.
With almost 50 years of experience with bat call ID, acoustic monitoring, software development, and training workshops across the US between them, Joe Szewczak and John Chenger will focus on manual vetting of calls to recognize species, steps to improve the quality of the calls that are recorded, equipment problems, and overcoming insects, birds, and other non-bat noise. Presented partly as software tutorial, participants will pick up tips and tricks of the manual review workflow including the SonoVet tool, GUANO metadata protocols, filters, using reference views, data management, and more.

Do you have a few .WAV files you are curious about? Email John Chenger "a few" of your files you would like us to review. Please include where the recordings were made and a photo of your microphone setup if possible.

Module 3: A "LIVE Walkabout" with Joe and Chris and Kim and John

When: Wednesday, February 20 from 6:15 PM to ???
Join Chris Corbin, John Chenger, Kim Livengood, and Joe Szewczak for an adventure filled evening of active bat monitoring Wednesday evening somewhere near Jacksonville. They will have a number of SonoBatLIVE and AnaBat Walkabout recording devices to demonstrate and hand out. You may also bring your own Windows 10 device for a free trial of SonoBatLIVE and borrow a compatible Pettersson or Binary Acoustic Technology microphone. We will also demonstrate the AcroBat microphone from Binary Acoustic Technology; the only commercially available microphone capable of tracking and separating multiple bats simultaneously. Meet place and time TBA, there should be time to grab a quick snack somewhere before meeting at the field location.

Cost: None, but seats with tables are limited! Order here now.
What to Bring: Due to the tight schedule, this is more of a guided tour than a hands-on workshop. Still, participants receive trials of SonoBat 4 North America, SonoBatLIVE, and the SonoBat Data Wizard. Participants can follow along if desired by bringing their pre-installed SonoBat-enabled laptop to this session, files Joe and John will be demonstrating will be available to copy prior to the event.
