He is one of the few expert cave and mine gate engineers in the United States, and won the US Forest Services “Wings Across the Americas” award in 2014 for a two-week project in Missouri. He worked as a Conservation Biologist at Bat Conservation International for 18 years, after working as a non-game wildlife technician for the Pennsylvania Game Commission. He has extensive experience with small-mammal trapping, artificial bat roosts, winter censuses, summer mist-netting and harp-trapping, cave and mine habitat assessments, bat gate design, karst management and protection, and educational outreach. He is currently Secretary of the Texas Speleological Survey, and organizes speleological expeditions in Texas and Mexico. Kennedy also coordinates the biennial National Cave and Karst Management Symposia. He has been in over 200 mines and 1500 caves in 9 countries, and has more than 12,000 hours underground experience, and is a Life Member and Fellow of the National Speleological Society.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"layoutArea\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"layoutArea\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJohn Chenger\u003c\/strong\u003e formed BCM in 1998 to provide bat-specific surveys nationwide, successful artificial bat roosts, and field gear. John’s experience includes thousands of hours underground, mapping, photographing, and winter inventorying caves and mines. Above ground experience includes summer and fall bat capture surveys, abandoned mine and cave assessments, and rocky habitat assessments. John is an expert in bat echolocation call analysis throughout North America. His first experience with radio tracking spring migrating Indiana bats was in 2000, and in 2019 he led a massive fall project coordinating up to 15 ground and air trackers. Bat Management Workshop • Cave City, KY

Class begins with a detailed glimpse of the variety of underground environments and how to determine their suitability to different bat species at all stages of their life-cycles. Bat natural history and the history of cave exploration and human use is combined to highlight the important biological implications of cave study and protection. Case studies of cave conservation are presented and field trips to nearby caves will illustrate many of the successful efforts to balance human and bat needs on the landscape. We will also briefly touch upon focus on other cave resources, such as cave invertebrates, groundwater, and archeological and paleontological resources that will benefit from good cave management.

Note: This training is ideal for federal and state agency biologists tasked with managing cave bats or consultants, students, and citizen scientists who seek training in assessing underground habitats for bats. Students will not be capturing or handling bats during this course, but they will be entering the underground environment and must be comfortable traveling thru dark, sometimes claustrophobic places. No technical rope or climbing experience is required. Students must bring approved caving gear including: helmets, two light sources, gloves, closed-toe shoes, and clothing with long-sleeves and long-pants. Coveralls and kneepads are strongly recommended. Additional pre-course materials and information about how to prepare will be provided upon registration. 

Dates: Monday August 21 thru Wednesday August 23, 2023. Training begins promptly at 10 am on Day 1 and will end at the conclusion of the night field trip (midnight) on the last day.

This workshop is not presented at Mammoth Cave National Park, only certain field research visits are in the park.

    You may return new, unopened items sold within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Shirts, hats, and mugs are made to order and are not returnable.

    Does BCM do replacements?
    We can only replace the exact item and version you ordered, and you are responsible to return the damaged item within 30 days. If you want to exchange for a different item, you will need to return the item and place a new order.

    All detectors are tested by BCM staff before shipping to customers. Please contact BCM first detailing the issue you are having with the hardware and obtain a Return Authorization. Should email or phone troubleshooting fail to resolve the issue, you should send the unit in suitable packaging to BCM, with the RA number written on the packaging.

    BCM will confirm the unit is defective was not abused or water damaged. BCM will replace the unit at our discretion usually within one week. Units requiring repairs may take 6-8 weeks.

    Pettersson factory warranty is one year.

    D500x External Microphone Return Policy
    All microphones are tested by BCM staff before shipping to customers. Please contact BCM first detailing the issue you are having with the Microphone and obtain a Return Authorization. Should email or phone troubleshooting fail to resolve the issue, you should send the unit in suitable packaging to BCM, with the RA number written on the packaging.

    DOA microphones are replaced immediately at no charge. There is a $150 for refurbishing used microphones, shipped immediately if in stock.

    Electronics
    Electronics purchased from BCM are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. These items must be in new condition with original packaging and accessories. All bat detectors sold by BCM are supported by the device's manufacturers. In the unlikely event a detector appears to be defective, please contact the customer support network for the computer manufacturer to have it serviced under warranty. Pettersson D500x/M500 devices have specific policies, see above.

    Software
    Software titles purchased from BCM are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. These items must be unopened and still in their plastic wrap.
