In theory, our "D" cell battery pack will provide more than 2.5x the run time you are used to seeing on your D500x, on paper at least; real world results vary. In practice, we have seen D500x go more than 30 days and still running on a project with very low bat and other noise activity. Other projects with high insect, wind/leaves, and bat activity barely make it to ~12 nights. This is because the D500x is either rejecting noise or recording, either way this uses more power than just waiting to trigger in a quiet environment.

This battery pack accepts 6-D cell batteries. Alkaline batteries are 1.5v and will produce 9 volts, which is safe to operate in all D500x. If 1.2v rechargeable batteries are used, 7.2v will be produced. This is ideal so that enough voltage is produced to operate the D500x in cooler weather with the lower voltage. Pettersson D500x Extended Battery Pack

Product Description

For projects which call for D500 deployments lasting ~12-20 days between servicing, we developed an external battery pack capable of using either disposable alkaline or rechargeable "D" cell batteries. This battery pack fits completely protected inside the Grab and Go storage/deployment box along with the D500x and 25' cable.

The connector mates securely with a locking screw to all D500x built/purchased from 2013 to the present, and all Special Edition D500x.

Most alkaline "D" cells provide 13,000 mAh, while standard "C" cells that typically run the D500 internally provide 6000 mHh capacity.

Either voltage is perfectly safe to operate a D500x and does not void warranty.

We at BCM have conducted acoustic monitoring surveys since 2001. We have used rechargeable batteries, rechargeable lead-acid batteries, solar panels, and variations. Our recommendation for a medium-length (~15 day) deployment between servicing is to use disposable alkaline batteries which have proven to be the most reliable and readily available power solution.

As a side note, we don't recommend leaving -any- bat acoustic monitor unattended more than ~2 weeks, so this battery capacity hits the sweet spot for regular service intervals.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask BCM a Question
  • Hello! I was just wondering if there is a reason that the old Pelican extended battery packs are no longer offered? I ordered 5 cases about a year and a half ago and recently had 2 packs fail. The contact springs collapsed, which resulted in the battery pack itself to heat up and smell of burned plastic. If others have had similar problems I would like to know so that I can retire the other three and find alternative solutions.

Hi I have not heard of this feedback and we were using the 4 cell cases on our project for ~2-3 years. We have migrated to the 6 cell packs as they definately have longer run time in our experiance, and do better in cold weather. Please use only alakaline or lithium batteries in the 4 cell packs for best results; rechargables do not provide enough volts. FYI I am looking to provide a solar option as the insect horde in FL can run the D500x out of power in 10-14 nights on our projects there; if you are in a similar situation check back for availability or contact me at jchenger@batmanagement.com -JC
