QUESTIONS & ANSWERSAsk BCM a Question
You say that the bats will not roost on the treated post. Why is that? If not the wood, what will they cling to—and how do you know?
Bats do not roost against the treated post because the roosting spaces are not made from treated wood. This applies to both the Rocket Roost and Super Rocket. At most, bats may land on the treated post very briefly but that is the most contact they would have with it. If desired and available in your area, consider using a black locust post instead, as this will outlast a treated post but availability and cost may factor in.
How many bats can a regular rocket box hold?
Up to about 50 for the standard 4''x4'' Rocket Roost. The point of that structure however is not to have a large number of bats in one roost; it is a more general all-purpose roost type that a wide variety of bat species may use, which may be more important than a large nursery bat house stuffed with one species.
Will wasps nest in the Rocket Box? I understand cleaning them from a straight up and down bat house but how can you remove them from the Rocket?? Once up, I don't see it coming down.
Paper wasps co-exist with bats, so it is not really necessary to remove them. Our rocket roosts are so tall that a few paper wasp nets will be of little concern. -Thanks
Can the Rocket be mounted to a metal post? If so, what size?
Hello- The 4'' Rocket Roost mount point is 2'' thick x 3'' wide extending below the roost. Two lag bolts are supplied to bolt thru the mount point and into the top of a 4''x4'' or larger wood post. You could replace the lag bolts with 5/16'' stainless steel bolts +washers and nylon lock nut (so it doesn't vibrate itself loost from wind), and drill matching holes into any metal post at least 2'' wide or larger.
What types of bats will fit in this roost? I live in MN and we have the large brown bat and I think they needed a slightly larger opening to enter the roost?
All of our bat houses may be used by any species in North America known to use artificial roosts. On 4'' Rocket Roosts, the entrance is enlarged as we have knocked off the corners around the entrance; this may not be apparent on photographs of test models.
How, and how often, do you have to clean the rocket roost? It seems if it's on a pole high up, we would not be able to reach it easily to clean it. Our Conservation Commission is considering installing some, based on successful acoustic surveys, but I could not find info on cleaning on your site. The state DEEP wildlife person advised the rocket roost for us, but again, cleaning would be an issue.
Hello- the Rocket Roost like all our bat houses are specifically designed so that most if not all the guano falls out on its own. So, there's nothing to clean out.
Is there anything to be aware of for South Florida? Wet, hot, hurricane-prone climate.
You are mainly targeting Mexican free tail bats in South Forida- I would recommend ColonyLodge or DayLodge type bat houses for your area. Set multiples to increase chance of success.... they should all receive direct morning sun. After that, shaded is ok in your area. You might consider adding a second roof with an air gap which will shade the roof of the bat house and take the direct heat off it.
The description states that we should use a "4''x4'' or 4''x6'' treated post." Does contact wood pressure treated lumber suitable for this purpose?
A pressure treated post is recommended since the post is in contact with the ground. Bats may land on the post but do not roost on the post.
You mention that up to 4 Rocket Roosts can be mounted on a single pole. Do you have instructions showing how this is done?
Hello- using a 4x6 or preferably a 6x6 post, multiple Rocket Roosts can be attached to the sides of single post. Use 2x4 material as needed to space out the roosts so they don't collide. For multiple Super Rocket Roosts, you would create individual 4''x6'' "bases" that each would attach to a 6x6 post. These bases may need spaced out with a 2x4 to keep the Super Rockets from touching.
Similarly, using a spacer and then a short 4x6 base, you might install a Super Rocket Roost on the side of a wall or very large pole (old telephone pole, etc.)- JC
